The Song of Guinevere [trade paperback or audio]

A Defense of Arthur's Wife

Alicia Snow

The Song of Guinevere--Trade Paperback and CD set

The greatest poems in the English language have traditionally been written by men about men. Though these men had women in their lives, the women's stories have come to us through a male point of view. Ms. Snow in The Song of Guinevere attempts to rectify that situation!

Guinevere is one of the most famous characters in our heritage. We do not even know that she truly existed, yet her legend is enduring. Ms. Snow reconciles the most powerful of these legends with the verifiable history of Arthurian times. She brings the soul of Guinevere to life in flowing classic verse for the contemporary romantic, as a fitting complement to the beautiful literature which has magnified King Arthur's stature over the centuries.

Adhering to the classic tradition of epic poetry, this work consists of a prologue which sets the tone when Guinevere is a mature woman at the pinnacle of Camelot's glory. The story flashes back in three folios to: her girlhood; her marriage to Arthur Pendragon; and finally to her fateful love for Lancelot. This is the story of a thoughtful woman living in a nation at war. It is also the story of a vulnerable wife who has the great misfortune to fall in love with her husband's best friend.

Inspired by ancient allusions to Guinevere's reputation as a healer, the author carefully researched medicine and medical training available in Dark Age Britain, and wove the story of Arthur's wife through the fabric of that scholarship. But for all her skill as a healer, Guinevere was still a woman forced to live within the culture of her times. She had the pagan heart of a Celt, but her life was restricted by the Roman Church and by Roman law. And, being heiress to a kingdom of her own, she was a pawn for the politicians of her day. In The Song of Guinevere, we watch as Guinevere contends with these conflicting forces. Here she truly comes to life--full of passions and misgivings, joys and sorrows, triumphs and regrets.

At last we understand why King Arthur and the tragic Lancelot risked so much for her love!
